Last night I was watching gymnastics on tv, and the following statement was uttered:
This gymnast has had the flu for the past two weeks, but she got some antibiotics and has been feeling much better.
Like nails on a chalkboard.
Granted, we all know that the intellect of your average tv commentator is..... not high. But come on people! Don't we all know by now that the flu is a VIRUS and as such not- responsive to antibiotics??
Way to spread misinformation, lady.

4 Pearls of Wisdom:
I also cringe when commentators or people in general insinuate that fungal infections can be treated with antibiotics.
I had a patient with allergies just ask for antibiotics. You know, because allergies can be cured with amoxicillin.
I've been known to throw popcorn in a rage at the TV when hearing idiotic statements like that... of course i have to clean it all up which makes me even angrier because if stupid stuff wasn't announced, the popcorn wouldn't have been thrown.
The number of people I have read about being treated for H1N1 with amoxy. Still, if the side effect profile is better than tamiflu and they both work equally crappily against the swine.....placebo effect might have a better risk/benefit tradeoff.
