I am "older" an MD-PhD student, and I am obsessed with my dog. I started this program at the age of 29 after working in business and hating it for way too long. Then came the husband, and then the fur-child. Oh, the PhD's in Epidemiology. This blog is about the ups and downs of all of the above.

Hair
Today I got my hair cut. It had been almost 6 months.
And although the cut is good, I specifically asked for about 2 inches.
The hairdresser took 12.
I am not thrilled.
At least she didn't give me bangs again. Then I might have killed her.
After many learning experiences I now avoid any mention of numbers and while discussing the desired length, I mime scissors with my fingers snipping at the length I want to end up with. Last time I was a good 6" from the ends, and my stylist said, "An inch and a half, sounds good!" It seems like even awesome stylists have an internal length conversion factor.
This is why I cut my own hair. The very last time I got my hair cut before I decided to make that transition, my husband saw me afterwards and stared at me in shock. Plus I have the kind of hair ultra curly hair where if I cut it perfectly evenly, it actually looks more uneven. May as well hack it off in the mirror.
I just got mine cut off too! I don't think it was 12", but it might have been close. It is a little too short now, but it will grow soon enough and goodness knows I've lived through worse hair cuts. I think yours looks good short and at least with no bangs, it will translate to longer faster.
Yes, agreed. Stylists have their own length conversion. And you all are right it will grow soon enough, and at least she did a good job (albeit a short job).
F -- I was totally thinking of doing my own hair, but mine isn't curly like yours is so I decided it was probably a bad idea. I had been doing my own split ends for a few months though with pretty good results. I think I need some sharper shears to really take care of it though. Do you just use regular scissors? Or do you have a special pair for hair only?
Trix - Aw thanks! I'm sure looks good too. It's true. The more they take off, the faster it seems to grow!
OMDG - didn't you buy some hair cutting scissors - I seem to remember you used them on my hair in hs? Your question isn't directed at me, but I think you can use regular scissors, you just shouldn't use them for other things.
I did have some hair cutting scissors at HS. My mom used them to cut my hair. But I think they're in CT now. God knows where. I don't think shears are that expensive. The most important thing is that they are sharp. I've been using regular scissors for my split ends, and they seem to work ok.
You say you "specifically asked for about 2 inches". Did you specify "take off 2 inches"? Or did you leave it open ended? Maybe she thought you meant "leave 2 inches"?
Just kidding, but we've all seen communication glitches like that before.
Just think of all the money you will save by not needing a haircut for the next couple of years. :)

I don't use special scissors. God forbid I do anything to actually increase the chances of looking good.
(Actually, I'm fairly sure nobody can tell I cut my own hair. When I tell people, they always look really shocked and aghast.)

Funny, I just had my hair cut yesterday and cannot believe how much my stylist took off. I told him to do whatever he wanted, so I'm not unhappy.
So far, comments are positive and are telling me it makes me look younger *at least not 40, yet*
I'm sure you look great.
