hard

Woohoo!! Hard drive failure.

Gonna be a fun next couple of days

Don't you love how they've made a $1000 computer disposable? The last one I had failed within the year. It's "fixed" now, but probably only because I never use it. The one before? Failed after 1 year as well. This one I've had 18 months.

Pieces of shit, I am telling you.

I think you speak for all of us. Thank you, OMDG.

What is really frustrating is that we can't even complain about the good old days when they built those things to last...

Yeah, that's why I buy Mac. It might be a few hundred dollars more than the PC counterpart, but they do last, and a quick purchase of applecare makes them last three (like my current machine). Or five like my last one. I'm not being all "Macs R AWSUM". But I've seen too many other companies have machines that they don't stand behind and then I have to worry about viruses... blah blah blah. That said, sometimes certain software only comes for PCs (database programs especially). Pros and cons... the cons being PC companies...

Mac!

People keep saying Mac, but I'm worried a) about replacing all of my software, b) keyboard shortcuts from PC not working, c) file incompatibility.

I also worry that the Mac processor would be completely inadequate for the data processing I have to do.

Files are almost universally compatible (so long as you own the appropriate software for the mac), all the keyboard shortcuts still work (you just have to modify the keystrokes in a minor way), and the processor they've put in Macs post 2008 are (for the most part) competitive with PC processors (unless you're looking to do memory/graphics intensive video games -- you can always upgrade the memory on a machine if you buy it online). A Macbook Pro will even run windows on a dual boot and you can switch back and forth if necessary. This also means you can install any current windows software you own on a MBP, too.

What are you using? I only had that experience with a Dell-- my Thinkpad lasted about 4 years, and my current Sony is in year 2.5 with no trouble signs. This is with very heavy daily usage.

Anon -- 1st time it was another dell, 2nd time it was a Lenovo thinkpad, this time it's another dell.

KA -- I don't really want to shell out another 2 grand on a pc. I think I'd be more inclined to get a desktop, but we'll have to see.

Oh, desktop because my laptop processor is currently too slow as well. Don't need a mac which is just as bad. I'm talking about slow using my statistical software. It's not a memory issue.
